Are dusal products allergy free?

If you’ve been shopping around for a new duvet or pillows you may have come across various allergy based terms: allergy-free, anti-allergy, hypoallergenic.  Are you unsure what these terms mean, or not sure which product type would be best suited to you? Perhaps you’re concerned that anti-allergy bedding will require you to sacrifice on quality?

We understand that choosing the right duvet and pillows can be confusing, and also costly if you make the wrong purchase, so here’s a guide to why you may need to opt for an anti-allergy product and which may be the perfect fit for you.

Don’t worry though, if you require anti-allergy bedding you don’t need to compromise on comfort. There are plenty of luxury, hotel-quality options for you to choose from.

Why are anti-allergy products needed?

For many, a good night’s sleep can be disrupted by allergies. Those allergies are often caused by dust mite allergen which is found within dust mite waste and one of the most common triggers for asthma, eczema and other respiratory conditions.

There is a broad misunderstanding or misconception that allergies relate to Feather and down products  which is not necessarily true. All of our Natural products are NOMITE® and Downafresh® certified and labelled, which means they are suitable for use by those who suffer with asthma or with allergies associated with dust mite allergens.

Dust mite normally survive on dead skin cells shed by everyone while sleeping or going about their daily tasks.  All our duvet & pillow casings are impermeable by the dust mite due to the tight callenared weave of our fabrics and our natural fills are sanitised to exceed European standards and therefore do not provide any food source for the mites.

Anti-allergy bedding works by either reducing the growth fungus / spores associated with allergies or preventing the ingress of dust mite by using materials that dust mites cannot penetrate.

What is the difference between hypoallergenic and anti-allergy?

Hypoallergenic means that the pillow or duvet is less likely to trigger allergies. Anti-allergy means that the pillow or duvet has been treated in some way to combat the development of dust mites, or to offer protection against their allergen. Essentially, they both serve to prevent allergies.

You may also come across the term non-allergenic. This means that the bedding shouldn't cause an allergic reaction, but allergy causes such as dust mites may still be present.

Are there any dùsal products that I shouldn’t buy?

Most allergy sufferers will opt for a synthetic filled duvet, like our Dacron® and Suprelle® duvets, however our feather and down duvets are all NOMITE® and Downafresh®  certified and so you don’t need to be restricted in your choice.

More about NOMITE®

Just because you have dust mite allergy you needn’t sacrifice the comfort and durability of down and feather bedding. In fact, the conditions created by down and feather bedding are not conducive to dust mite survival and reproduction. This makes them an ideal choice for people with house dust mite allergy.

NOMITE® certified bedding also has an extremely tightly woven fabric cover, creating a physical barrier to the dust mite. As there is no food source inside the Duvet, topper or Pillow due to the high level of cleanliness delivered through the sanitisation process, and no way for the dust mite to penetrate, this can help prevent allergy symptoms associated with exposure to house dust mites and the allergens associated with their waste.

More about Downafresh®

Bedding products marked with the Downafresh brand are filled with feathers and down that were previously washed with water and dried at temperatures of at least 100°C. During the cleaning process environment-friendly cleaning agents are used which preserve the natural properties of the feathers and down.

Feathers and down are a product of nature, they are produced according to strict statutory provisions and originally do not contain any harmful substances.

The Downafresh® Licence label confirms that a product has been independently tested and verifies that product meets the Downafresh® standard.
